Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch end by half an inch or more. This is almost always a hinge problem, not an opener problem. The top hinge has worn or the weld at the hinge has cracked, and the gate is now loading all its weight onto the opener arm.
- The bracket where the opener arm attaches is pulling away from the gate. You can see daylight between the bracket plate and the gate frame, or the bolts have started to oval out their holes. Keep running it and the bracket will tear clean off, usually right when you are leaving for work.
- The opener arm moves but the gate barely does. The weld or the shear pin has let go where the arm connects. The motor is working hard and doing almost nothing, which burns out the gearbox faster than anything.
- You can hear a creak or pop from the hinge side when the gate moves. That creak is the sound of metal flexing in a way it should not. In Duncanville’s summer heat, metal expands; in winter it contracts. A cracked weld has no give left, and the pop you hear is the crack opening and closing.

DIY or Call Us?
If you want to tighten the bracket bolts and check for obvious cracks, that is safe to do with the opener unplugged and the gate in manual mode. What we do not recommend is welding on a gate that has a Mighty Mule opener still wired to it, or grinding near the arm while it is under tension. The opener’s capacitor and the control board do not like the stray current from a welder on the same gate frame, and a gate that lets go mid-weld is a serious injury waiting to happen. We have also seen more than one homeowner weld a bracket on solid and then realize the gate cannot swing the full arc because the arm now binds. A properly welded and painted steel bracket on a Mighty Mule gate lasts 10 to 15 years in North Texas weather, assuming the gate itself stays balanced and the hinges are serviced. The stock powder-coated brackets, by comparison, commonly fail in 3 to 5 years on gates that cycle more than six or eight times a day. The difference is material thickness and the quality of the weld.
Sometimes. If the original bracket tore off cleanly and the gate frame is sound, we can grind the area, weld the bracket back on, and reinforce it with a gusset. If the gate tube itself is rusted thin or the bracket is bent past keeping its shape, a new fabricated bracket is the better call.
